The SurfyBear SurfyMan: Vintage Brownface Tremolo Authority
Authentic Brownface Harmonic Tremolo and Classic Blackface Pulse
The SurfyBear SurfyMan is built to faithfully recreate the legendary vibrato channel of early 1960s American tube amplifiers. This is not a digital approximation. It is a fully analog tremolo platform that captures the dynamic feel and dimensional movement of true bias modulation, recreated using matched JFET transistors. Flip into Brownface mode and you get the harmonic tremolo circuit inspired by early 1961 to 1962 designs. High and low frequencies alternate in a lush, phase like swirl that feels almost rotary in motion. The effect breathes. It pushes air. It reacts to your playing. Dig in and the modulation softens. Back off and the movement becomes more pronounced. It is expressive, musical and incredibly addictive. Switch to Blackface mode and you get the cleaner, brighter optical style tremolo introduced later in the decade. This is the classic pulsing amplitude modulation heard on countless recordings since the mid 60s. It is punchy, articulate and immediate, adding movement without altering the tonal foundation of your guitar.
Full Preamp Section with Vintage EQ Response
The SurfyMan is more than a tremolo. It features a complete preamp section with Master, Presence, Bass, Treble and Volume controls, allowing you to shape the response just like a vintage amplifier front end. Presence adjusts negative feedback in the high frequencies for added bite or smoothness. The Vintage EQ mode simulates the interaction between a tube amplifier and a loudspeaker impedance curve, delivering the dynamic feel and tonal contour of a traditional amp and speaker pairing. Switch to FRFR mode for a full range flat response if you prefer a more neutral output. This is the kind of tone shaping that lets you dial in everything from sparkling surf cleans to rich, dimensional tremolo textures that sit perfectly in a mix.
Tremolo Controls with Studio Level Flexibility
The Intensity and Speed controls give you full command over the modulation depth and rate. The tremolo switch engages the effect, while the Mute Bypass switch provides true bypass for the main output and mutes the line and headphone outputs when disengaged. You also get a Line output with optional pad for level control, a dedicated headphone output, and a guitar level output. This makes the SurfyMan equally at home on stage, in the studio, or as a silent practice rig. With harmonic Brownface swirl, classic Blackface pulse, and full preamp control, this unit delivers the dimensional movement and feel that made vintage American tremolo circuits legendary.
Built for Real World Performance
The SurfyMan runs on 9 to 18 volts DC with low current draw and accepts any polarity. The input impedance is 1 M ohm for proper guitar loading. Line output impedance is 600 ohms. The headphone output supports headphones above 8 ohms. Every control is laid out intuitively across the top panel, including Master, Presence, Intensity, Speed, Bass, Treble and Volume. This is a true performance piece that integrates seamlessly into modern rigs while preserving vintage soul.
