Experimental Fuzz Pedal With an Unusual Voice

The Unpleasant Surprise is an experimental fuzz and gate built around an intentionally oddball circuit. This is not a fuzz designed to politely round off the edges. It produces strange, harsh artifacts while retaining the essence of what you play, making it a compelling choice when conventional fuzz sounds are simply too well behaved.

Volume and Onset Controls

The Volume control provides plenty of output and reaches unity gain around noon. It can also be used to push an amplifier or the next pedal in the signal chain. The Onset control affects interstage gain while behaving like an inverse gate threshold. Turning it up delivers greater saturation and longer sustain, while lower settings produce a more sputtery response.

Treble Gain and Crush Switching

Three switches provide another level of control over the Unpleasant Surprise. T engages a simple output treble cut. G affects amplifier bias, providing open or saturated settings and variations in the grain of the distortion. C introduces feedforward crushing, with the Onset control determining the amount of compression. Together, these controls give the pedal considerable room for shaping everything from sustained fuzz to fractured gated textures.
